Seeds of Peace: Supporting Nonviolent Direct Action Since 1986

Seeds of Peace provided meals to thousands at the RNC

Volunteer with Seeds Of Peace

Over the last year we had been preparing for the Republican National Convention with a lot of hard work and organizing. Nick went to the twin cities in April and was joined by Max in June. The rest of the collective arrived in July to conduct and support our action training camp, Wilderness First Responder Course, and Action Medic Training. When those trainings were over we moved from Anathouth Farm to the Twin Cities to start intensive organizing for the kitchen and the medic space. We were greatly helped in efforts to procure food and find a kitchen site by Minneapolis Food Not Bombs, Sisters of Camelot, and Barb from the farm. The kitchen also received incredible help from F&D, Emily, and John all from the Twin Cities. The medics worked closely with the Northstar Collective a locally formed medical support group, to set up the Clinic and get street medics ready for the actions.

Somehow, during all this work Grumble left to go worked with long time Seed’s friend Calico Future on the PNC2RNC Bicycle Caravan. The ride left Madison and traveled to the RNC taking fourteen days to do so. The riders stopped in communities along the way promoting bikes and working on community gardens to advocate sustainability. Grumble left the ride after a week and Calico and friends continued to do food support with some Seed’s gear and her veggie oil truck.

We often face having to deal with everything coming together for the kitchen at the last minute and the RNC was no exception. We nailed down our kitchen location about a week before the convention, but had to wait to secure funding just three days before our first meal. On August 26, we drove the buses on a back root to Saint Paul to avoid any unwanted attention. We were honored to work with Felipe and have him and his kitchen to help us out. At the same time the medics in our collective were setting up the clinic and getting supplies together for the actions. The next day we served our first meal at the convergence space, a lovely lunch. A few days latter the police raided the Convergence center and several organizer houses. They eventually rounded up 8 people and charged them with felony conspiracy charges. At that point things just got crazier as the week progressed. On Saturday we met the Bike Riders and Calico serving a dinner to the Pagan Cluster after their full moon ceremony. It was the end of the bike ride. Sunday was a busy day in which we provided breakfast for the Veterans for Peace Anti-War March and prepared affinity group lunch boxes for the start of the RNC and the next day’s actions.

On Monday morning we cooked a meal for 4,000 to be served at lunch for the March on the RNC Anti-War Protest. The Seeds of Peace crew headed out and bikes and in Felipe’s truck to the capital to serve lunch. They also brought food for those engaging in blockades and marches that were not allowed. Two volunteers with the food crew got arrested latter that afternoon, Steven and Mo. The police were harsh using pepper spray and tear gas on largely non-violent demonstrators. Two of our medics were also among the 200 people arrested by the police. The next day we made another large lunch for the Poor Peoples March for Human Rights and Economic Justice. The following day we provided lunch to the Student Walk-Out and the Anti-War Committee’s street actions. During this time we also provided meals to jail support, the medic, and people getting out of jail. On September 7, after everyone had gotten out of jail we packed up the kitchen and the clinic. Several days latter we traveled home.

Seeds of Peace would like to thank Sisters of Camelot, Northstar Health Collective, the RNC Welcoming Committee, Emily, John, F‡D, Minneapolis FNB, Veterans For Peace, the Pagan Cluster, Martha, Amy, and all the volunteers who helped chopped veggies and wash dishes.
